More than just an Arena

As an architect who has spent the majority of my career designing sports and entertainment facilities, it is very exciting to be part of the SacramentoFIRST taskforce.  Mayor Johnson has embarked on a uniquely open and inclusive process that I believe will ensure the success of this effort where previous attempts to develop an arena have faltered.  Ironically, all too often, arena and stadium developments are consummated in “behind the scene” deals between the city, developer and team with little or no public input to the process.

I say ironic as it is difficult to name a building type that is, by its very nature, more “public”.  While cities are often defined by their skyscrapers, iconic civic buildings or museums, it is most often the arena, ballpark, or stadium that captures the heartbeat of a community.  From the corporate executive to the taxi driver, these venues cut across demographics, cultures and gender.  They are “memory makers” that become more beloved generation after generation.  Fans feel ownership in their team (as they should!) and these buildings are their home.

The best of these projects are planned in such a way that they can transform entire areas of the cities in which they reside.  They in effect become entertainment destinations of shopping, dining and lifestyle experiences that also happen to include a basketball game.

Mayor Johnson’s vision for this project is truly inspired.  Sacramento is a city with great attributes and an NBA fan base whose passion and understanding of the sport are second to none.  This city deserves the kind of project that creates a community asset and pride that goes far beyond the events which it will host.

I believe the task force is an important first step in insuring that will happen and I feel very privileged to play a part.
